NIHAR MEHTA was born on 3 March 1975 in one of the most prominent and respected families of Philosophers and Musicians of Ahmedabad, India . He started learning Tabla & Indian classical music at Saptak school of music in Ahmedabad under his uncle Nandan Mehta and Pt Puran Maharaj. Apart from his musical education, Nihar is an Advocate at the Bar Council of Gujarat. He holds the degrees of Bachelor of Commerce & Bachelor of Law from the University of Gujarat . Since 2004 Nihar is happily married and living in Villefranche sur mer, South of France, promoting Indian classical music, art & culture in France & Italy through the Association Saptak India of which he is the Founder-President.
  
His great grand uncle Shri Suryashankar Mehta was the Diwan of the State of Kutch , North Gujarat and his grate grand father late Shri Diwan Bahadur Narmadashankar Mehta was the Diwan of the Royal state of Cambay in western India . He was also a very well known Vedantist and Philosopher of India. The books on Hindu Philosophy written by him on the Vedanta & Upnishadas are today considered one of the most important and valued writings ever written on those subjects. His Books like the Facets of Hinduism, Dharma Tatva Vichar, Hindu Eugenics and The History of Hindu Phylosophy ect are few of those valued books.
His grand father late Shri Yashodhar Mehta was a Barrister (Bar at Law , England ) and prominent Philosopher, Novelist and Astrologer of Gujarat. Yashodhar Mehta has contributed by writing number of famous Novels in Gujarati like the famous Sari gati raity, Maha Ratri and the famous book on history “Nevu Varsh or The 90 years”, a book on a very interesting period of Indian history from 1857 to 1947. His main subject of interest was also the Hindu astrology. His years of research on Hindu Astrology was put into writing by him in his 7 great books on Astrology. He was also a member of the official language commission & legislative commission of India , Govn. of India and remained the Chairman of minimum wages advisory board of Govt. of Gujarat & also the Chairman of official language & legislative commission of the Govt. of Gujarat.

His Father Mr Murari Mehta played Pakhawaj, an ancient percussion and learnt from a great guru Shri Sadashivrao Luttade from a very early age.
His Uncle Shri Nandan Mehta a very prominent tabla player and one of the most important organiser of festivals in India . Nandan Mehta is also active in teaching and promoting Indian classical music through the well known Music Institute "SAPTAK" in Ahmedabad. "SAPTAK" a Public Charitable Trust was founded in the year 1980. Today Saptak School is a one of the most prestigious school of Indian classical music with more than 250 regular students and it is also organises India's biggest and most important Music Festival for 13 days from January 1 to 13 “THE SAPTAK FESTIVAL” in Ahmedabad since last 27 years. Saptak also organises other week long festivals to promote the young artists including a special festival for women artists. This Festival was also been covered by the BBC WORLD television for its famous programme DESTINATION MUSIC series 2006.
